Daywalker ~Rise~ Listen on: SoundCloud

CatbossSoundCloud description

DEBUNK

The last of my three entries to the Homestuck Music Contest, the other two being Guns Blazing and Vodka Mutiny.

A song for Kanaya, this song is - in my opinion - the weakest contender of the lot. Daywalker nonetheless marks my first attempt at using real audio in a song - I recorded the flute performance myself. Unfortunately, my playing, recording, and production are definitely not up to snuff, honestly. Given that it was recorded with a terrible laptop mic, with a player who hadn't played in a long while (me), I suppose that was honestly no surprise.

However, I love both the harp and flute melodies in this song. It was a blast to play, and I'd definitely think about using them again at some point in the future.

This one is called Skaian Shuffle. Warning: hard limiting, repetitive structure, and cheap beats.

I made this something like two years ago, and I never let it be published because the quality is really only so-so. However, recently I've been working with Riki Tsuji on remastering some Homestuck tunes for the DJ set he'll be playing live at the Austin meetup. For this reason, I've pulled Shuffle out of the mothballs and remastered it to be more conducive to bapping.

Bapping is what we in the music industry call DJing. We're very professional.

Right around when Cherubim came out in March, I got a few requests to hear what the original sketches were for Red Sucker and Green Lolly. These were the skeletons that I gave the team. I worked with them through the process with input and suggestions on the pacing and structure, but they really took these simple ideas and ran in the best possible direction!

The cherubs are bizarre creatures, and everything about them is pretty far out there, so I focused on chromaticism in the themes to give it some off kilter base. Caliborn is (pardon my French) a little shit. He’s diabolical and selfish. I decided to base this skeleton on a minor triad to give it a darker tone right off the bat. Mirroring it on the Calliope sketch accidentally gave it a Kuja’s Theme tone to it, which I ended up loving. I immediately approached Kali about adding his own personal flare to it. I’ve always been a monumental fan of his compositions, especially TOTA, which was the sound I was looking for. He nailed it exponentially!

A combination of the original Showtime and Dissension I made to serve as a strife theme for Jake English a year ago. I was actually going to make strife tunes for all of the alpha kids, but I was worried that Valor might be feel repetitive with Assault on the same album. Then Bowman made Elephant Gun and I just stopped working on it.

Here’s another Homestuck tune, this time for the Frog Temple and all its inhabitants. Jade inspired the bass and flute, while the rest is based on the Exiles. I intended it to sound desert-like. so I just had a memory hit me out of nowhere - me and serialsymphony discussed quoting each other's tracks reciprocally back when Dave Strider's Cool Mixtape was meant to be on Cosmic Caretakers. i.e. this track does reference The Light's Rebellion at 2:56

we both made the front half of our tracks, and then traded motifs in the back half, so it really is a reciprocal reference

sorry for your ears @ anyone who listens through this to confirm its existence

SerialSymphonyTumblr ask, excerpt

Lilith: [...] how does shitjazz.wav relate to DAVE STRIDER'S COOL MIXTAPE? cause the sbahj show sample is autotuned in DSCM, but in shitjazz, it's not; how are they related? which came first?

COOL MIXTAPE came first, but they're the same song, if there's any difference between the two it's likely just some weird thing that happened when exporting to .wav instead of .mp3, or maybe a random change I added and forgot about.

As a fun piece of Lore(TM), i chose the soundcloud image for that one based on a profile picture my brother used to use, I thought it was the perfect 'generic anime white guy' version of Dave and it made the horrible quality of the song twice as ironic, which I'm sure he'd approve of.

I really spent way too much time making music back then. Feels ridiculous to look back at it now.

Rustbloods, unite! Do not be content to keep your head down with this sax cover of James Roach & Toby Fox's "Keep your head down" and "Rustblood".

This cover story was surprisingly difficult to do. Hiveswap (the long awaited sidequest for the Homestuck series) is very new, so there's a real possibility of spoiling things -- and this is especially the case since there are folks who are already familiar with Homestuck and folks who are not.

This cover story could be like the prequel to the events of Hiveswap, maybe. Or at least, an imagining of something that could fit there.

This is sort of a tribute tune to the Webcomic "MS Paint Adventures". It's very fresh; I recorded it almost as soon as I finished writing it. I slathered on Phasers, Chorus, Reverb and Echo to support the dreamy feel of the piece. It's played almost entirely with harmonics. Altered Tuning, too. ;)

i meant to upload this at midnight but i got hit with food poisoning so i had to take drugs for the mind-numbing pain and go straight to sleep. i'm still in a lot of pain right now as i upload this. but i don't wanna miss the date. so forgive me if any details look off about the video. blame the food poisoning.

also, i kind of forgot it was 6/12 so i had to rush. i made this whole thing entirely over the course of this past weekend. i wish i could've spent more time mixing, getting a good guitar/bass tone, etc. but we'll just have to live with what i have now. maybe i'll make some more adjustments to the audio when i don't have food poisoning anymore.

this video marks the first on-camera appearance of my electric guitar, which i bought in march. and it's not even functioning as a guitar for most of this video. well, anyway, i now have a full rhythm section! drums, keys, bass. well. it's not technically a bass, but whatever. i'll take what i can get. and yeah. my drumstick broke on the last beat of the tune. very lucky. or unlucky.

i went a little harder with the jazz harmony on this one. a lot of 9ths and 13ths and dorian and lydian. some b9's and b5's and #5's in there too. it might sound weird to you if you ain't about it, but you'll get used to it. i sure did.

and i'm still working on that osu! video. it's coming soon.

Too L8

This is my final entry to the Homestuck Music Contest, this time for Vriska. This song was written with her confession scene in mind, so it quotes from John’s leitmotif Doctor as well as MeGaLoVania and Spider’s Claw for Vriska. There’s also a bit of Sburban Jungle, Homestuck Anthem, and BL1ND JUST1C3: 1NT3RROG4T1ON, since I like to end my songs on a morbid note.

The piano/chiptune combo from WV returns here, since I find it fairly useful for setting a melancholy mood. The electric guitar and bass were pretty much required, this being a Vriska theme after all. The alternation between the heavy guitar parts and the lighter piano sections was chosen to reflect the changing tone of Vriska’s conversation with John, the leitmotifs roughly matching the various subjects they talk about.

Too L8 took longer to put together than BB and WV combined, mostly due to school and sickness, but I’m still not certain about parts of it. Feedback was greatly appreciated on the first two songs, and any comments on this one would be fantastic.

So yeah I guess I’m doing the music contest for Homestuck! Roxy is my favorite character so I decided to see if I couldn’t do her justice with a piece of music!

The beginning is supposed to be wizardy, and I tossed in a waltz rendition of Jasper’s theme because cats. After that, I used the bassline from Aggrievance (Mom’s strife theme). Then a chiptune section because she’s a gamer grrrl. I’m still a little unsure about the part at the end because I’m afraid that it might not fit her very well, but we’ll see. It’s supposed to represent her sleepwalking dreamself flying around Derse and the Furthest Ring.

Wanderer’s Vigil

This is my second entry to the Homestuck Music Contest. This song is for WV in his various identities, from Villein to Vagabond. The industrial drum set was chosen to give a feel for his origins as a pawn in the vast mechanisms of SBURB, while the determined mood is based on his defiance in the face of overwhelming odds. The song briefly quotes from Sburban Jungle, along with Skaian Skirmish.

Wanderer’s Vigil (First Update)

Back in the old days of a couple months ago, I entered a piece called Wanderer’s Vigil into the Homestuck Music Competition. It was pretty low-quality, but I think I’ve figured out some of the parts that didn’t work in it, such as the square waves and lack of equalization. Here’s an updated rendition. It’s still in progress, and feedback on what to work on next would be great, but it’s at least better than it was. Whoo, musical progress!

Oh, yeah, and it’s a theme for WV on the Battlefield. Quotes are from Skaian Skirmish and Sburban Jungle.

im not redoing my other song (bolin's cereal journey) because even though i dont like that song either i dont see much "couldve been better/more interesting" in it either. i mean its already hard enough to make splitsuns better and i failed in that but at least made a maybe more interesting rack. its still a minute long track i made in an hour but my mind tells me this time the track isnt complete shit.

in any case this is the first actual song i made and finished in just over two months so yay for that. it was a good musical exercise
