Erik Scheelebooklet commentary

Also known as Trollcops, this is a rather old idea that I once had for a Dad strife theme. I mean, all the kids had fight music, why not him? Anyway, between a chiptune variant I started and Trollcops, it's had a bit of a journey, but when it turned out alright on piano too, I didn't see any reason not to record a few takes.

Let me just put this out here, I'm not a jazz pianist at all, nor is this really jazz. Not very complicated jazz, at any rate. I know there's way better jazz playing out there, and probably quite a few pianists that'll be wondering why some pianist douchebag thinks he can play jazz, well rest assured, I'm not claiming I'm amazing at all.

Of course, not being able to play something magnificently and to the best form of the genre didn't really stop me from playing around with this piece. So I did.

I also think it would fit in during the first Intermission, with all the under-the-hat chicanery and stabbings that went on.

And now, more piano recordings.

So I discovered that the Under the Hat (aka Trollcops) changes can get an incredible jive to them. But this one other time, that’s in the recording here, I played around with it.

In other words, it’s played plain, then with an improvised solo (that has some sucky bits), then through again with a little reprise.

Hope you enjoooooy

This version from One Year Older was first released on Tumblr in May 2011. (The download is dead, but it's preserved in the sound test. It's actually the same recording!)

Although the release of AlterniaBound and this Tumblr recording are only about two months apart, and the Tumblr commentary above is written some amount of time in retrospect, we still figure that Trollcops precedes this piano improv/arrangement. Voila the reasoning:

  • This track is contextualized with "Under the Hat (aka Trollcops) changes can get an incredible jive to them."
  • This track's filename (as posted on Tumblr) is trollcopsjammin.mp3.
  • The booklet commentary for Trollcops makes it pretty clear that the mellotron saved that track, probably during when it was being arranged.

We're confident they're referencing each other one way or the other; besides the structure, the improv/solo sections have particular common material. But since the timeframe is ambiguous and our reasoning above is a bit shenanigans, "which came first?" could still go either way.

As for the "chiptune version" which Scheele refers to in the booklet commentary for this release, August 2012, on One Year Older? Totally a mystery! We've seen no sign of that one anywhere, online.

And one more Tumblr post from August 2011:

And then one time I improvised around on piano with Trollcops. And thought it was good enough to like, post around and such.
What a stupid idea that was
*laugh track*

(although in all honesty this is probably some of the better solo improvising I've done and managed to catch on recording)

It might have been a reupload of this same recording, though we can't tell because the SoundCloud upload, "under-the-hat-stuff", has gone missing. If it was a reupload (the original was just via Dropbox) then it maybe makes sense that it was removed in favor of the proper album release on Bandcamp, but that's speculation.
