Main theme of the game! Our heroic hero deserves a heroic theme, so here it is. It was made mostly with the Marvel Superheroes soundfont, and i believe the intro was also vaguely inspired by the Silvestri Avengers theme.
Ballad of The Bald (Intro) Listen on: Bandcamp
Opening cutscene theme. I envisioned the cutscene to be classic megaman/shovel knight inspired, and to match that i made a chiptune track for it, including realistic NES soundchip limitations.
I also added the Witch’s motif here, so that when the player reaches the final boss the melody already seems familiar to them (since they heard it from here).
Foundation (Foyer) Listen on: Bandcamp
While the game is very much inspired by Zelda and Binding of Isaac, i wouldn’t say the soundtrack is. In fact, i am not quite sure what i would say it’s inspired by. Back when the game was envisioned as 8-bit, the soundtrack was supposed to be entirely chiptune, or rather it was supposed to use the Cave Story soundfont. However, as the game developed and we realized that sticking to 8-bit graphics would be overly difficult, we decided to go into a more gameboy advance-esque aesthetic, and the soundtrack’s direction changed to bout - now sporting soundfonts from around that era of games.
That’s why there is so much Mother 3 in here. And also because i just like how it sounds.
Beyond that, i decided to go a bit ham with the time signature in the latter half of the track, having it be 5/4 three times and then 3/4 two times.
Bigwig (Foyer Boss) Listen on: Bandcamp
I was debating for some time on whether to have one boss theme or a unique one for each floor, and ultimately i decided on the 2nd option. It gave every boss more personality while also being easier to make due to the tracks being remixes of the floor themes (i made all 3 boss themes in the last couple hours of the jam).
For this one i got rid of a section, added a guitar, another layered on lead, and spiced up the drums. But you could already hear that. Probably.
Overgrowth (Greenhouse) Listen on: Bandcamp
This was the first track i made for the game! There’s a WIP version of it out there which is made entirely out of organaya (the Cave Story music sequencer) instruments, since it was started before we decided that the game wasn’t gonna be in a NES-esque style. I decided to give myself a lot more freedom with the arrangement once we ditched that idea, however a lot of the organaya instruments are still in the final version.
I wanted this track to evoke a feeling of awe, and for the player to audibly go “oooh damn” when the drop happens. That’s right, it’s showoff hour, hope you enjoy it.
Side note, mastering this was kinda hellish because this has much more bass than every single other track on the ost.
Mean Green (Greenhouse Boss) Listen on: Bandcamp
Just like the original track was the first stage theme i made for the game, this is the first boss theme i made for it. It’s also why the structure and the way it’s constructed is different compared to the other two.
I am 100% sure that i already used the riff from the piano in the back somewhere else, but oh well.
Hairnet (Kitchen) Listen on: Bandcamp
This track channels a spanish-esque sound while also, for once in this ost, extensively using samples. Since this was the final floor, i decided to make the theme more frantic compared to the other two.
The breakdown at the end samples the Upward Movement (Dave Owns) drum loop (a track from homestuck). I love that sample so much ngl, i use it any chance i get - so i decided to sneak in the slightest bit of homestuck in this game jam as well.
That part also samples pot and pan sounds.
Re-Greaser (Kitchen Boss) Listen on: Bandcamp
Big. Strong. Aggressive. This Cook is HEATED and ready to make a GOURMET MEAL out of YOU!!!!!!!
The name of this track comes from the word Greaser, that being the extinct type of person who wears grease in their hair and dresses all leathery. In fact, most of the names for this ost i tried to tie into hair or hair products somehow. Mostly.
Trades for Braids (Shop) Listen on: Bandcamp
This one’s tango, to add that refined taste to both the wig shop and the wigkeeper.
You can hear a very subtle “chikachika” in the back, which is sampled from Wind Waker’s Molgera battle theme.
The Witch's Curse (Final Boss) Listen on: Bandcamp
And finally, the boss theme of the Witch herself!
This track was primarily inspired by “Haunted Castle” from Team Sonic Racing and very slightly Lchvasse’s “Dick Dastardly Richardson Theme”. The song is meant to almost taunt you, in big part signified by the Kefka laughs and the Bald chorus from Wrestling Stone Cold.
I was debating on the name for this one a lot, but ended up going with the title drop. After all, who else but the Witch deserves it? (This is a great moment to mention that the original quote the game’s subtitle references is actually “the curse of the witch”, however, probably due to misremembering, we instead went with “the witch’s curse”. Which turned out to be a good thing, considering several other jam games ended up using the proper quote for their subtitle, so ours ended up standing out!
I was originally planning on making a phase 2 theme which would be basically the same thing as this but with the main motif of the game. However, we decided that this track was already long enough to last for two phases. Oh, and we didn’t have enough time to actually make a second phase, so either way it ended up working out.
I sure do love composing metal, so this was a treat to make. Really fun track to work on, and great end result too! (in my opinion.)
