Fren Zone Listen on: Bandcamp
The main theme! This track went through about 4 iterations actually, which isn’t really common for me, but i ended up settling on this chill, 90s-esque one. I think this is still one of the most professionally sounding tracks i have made, and i am proud of it.
The melody of this became a very recurring motif throughout the rest of the soundtrack, so keep your ears peeled… (rather weird phrase, no? I do not want to peel my ears. I want my ear skin intact, personally.)
As many people noticed, i snuck a little bit of the deltarune theme at the very end of the organ solo (which i noticed a lot of people calling the “freedom motif”, and, no, it’s not that, it’s the main theme. But i get why people think it would be that, it’s used a lot lol). This has no thematic reasoning and was just added there for fun. Sorry, no deep lore implications here!
I added a sample of Hot Dad’s Fren song, which ended up also turning into a motif in its own right. I mean, it’s one of the Fren songs, so no reason why it shouldn’t be in here. I struggled with figuring out the key change for a bit while putting together the track, but it ended up really good, so, hell yeah!
Lastly, for the album-only ending of the track i added a nod to the little solo Joel attempted to play on his guitar at the end of the song. I am thankful for the honor, and that little gesture is now in the song itself!
Gamer Moment Listen on: Bandcamp
Little bundle of sounds and jingles for Fren playing Robert Cop. The timeline for this is supposed to be: him walking, shooting, then his low health jingle plays, he gets damaged, he game overs, Fren clicks through menu options, presses “Continue”, the game continues with the Robert Cop jingle, he starts walking, gets damaged twice, and repeat, repeat, repeat.
He do be gaming ngl.
The Story Begins Listen on: Bandcamp
The opening cutscene theme. By now it becomes pretty evident that the game’s soundtrack is veering into a very Pokemon-esque sound. (Fun fact: at the time of me writing this commentary, i have never properly played a single Pokemon game. Out of non-romhacks, i have only played Fire Red and gotten to the Viridian Forest.) Indeed, a lot of the instruments throughout this soundtrack use the Pokemon Emerald soundfont.
The track seemingly ended up being too short compared to the text i wrote for the opening cutscene, resulting in each panel having to be rushed. Whoops.
Poompmaxxing Listen on: Bandcamp
Pretty simple cover/remix of the Hard Time theme for Bogan’s gym. I actually had to recreate the hard time theme for easier tweaking by looking for the samples used in the track.
Bogan monologues on the track for a bit. Listen to his wise words!
Gachipon Listen on: Bandcamp
Gachi Gacha. Good name.
Feel the club vibes. Featuring the glorious DVS Saxophones, primarily known for being used by Toby Fox in the Homestuck soundtrack and then basically nothing else.
In Poompmaxxing Bogan got to talk about mooscles, in this track Van Darkholme got to talk about, uh, semen. It’s only fair.
Splinter Scuffle Listen on: Bandcamp
The forest fight theme. I made the bassline for this extra heavy by layering the lighter and faster slap bass with slower and heavier acoustic bass.
Considering this is a fight with much lower stakes and a much calmer context, i decided to make it less action-y and more retrospective in its vibe. The lead chiptune instrument is layered with an accordion for a harmony.
At the last section of the track before the loop you can hear a very subtle chiptune section playing an approximation of the first part of LEGO Racers 2 OST - Bonus Game, which is commonly used as Fren’s theme. Thought it would be only right to sneak it in the game somehow.
Onward Listen on: Bandcamp
The map theme. A simple marching tune with drums. Planning a glorious adventure…
Heart of Gold Listen on: Bandcamp
Theme of Sack of Flour. This is a cover of the title screen theme from the game. All the instruments here are from Pokemon FR/LG except for the goofy synth bass, which is from WappyDog, and the drums which are from Wario Land 4.
The file for this track is called “Bag of Flour screen”. Since then i have corrected my mistake and know with my full heart (of gold) that his name is Sack of Flour. May we never forget it.
Futuristic Robert Listen on: Bandcamp
Theme of Robert Cop. It’s, of course, a cover of the famous Robert Cop theme.
This one is maybe the most-non soundfont track on the whole soundtrack, since i wanted to make it sound especially synthy and futuristic. Everything here is synths except for the drums and the little chiptune sounds, which are both from the Cave Story soundfont (Cave Story doesn’t actually use a soundfont, the ost was made with ORG Maker, however i use a soundfont version of the same sound).
HET Listen on: Bandcamp
Theme of Felix the Cat (?). It’s hard to tell, but this is a very very distorted cover of the game over theme from the Genesis bootleg, just made to sound as freaky as the actual visuals on the screen. This track is actually entirely synths and samples i believe.
Tourney Tussle Listen on: Bandcamp
Gym theme. Actually, is it a gym or a tournament? I don’t think we ever decided on the in-game lingo.
This ain’t chill like the forest theme, it is BIG BOY time now. However, while tenser, it’s still pretty emotional melody-wise, which i guess is just my general go-to sound. I’d say this is very much the most pokemon sounding track on the whole ost.
The second to last part of the track has a pretty clear reference to Tekkno Pidgeon, since it always sounded a lot like a pokemon track to me anyways, so, hey, why not throw it in here.
Ja, Vi Avskyr Listen on: Bandcamp
Track that Fien plays on his organ before the final boss. This is actually just Norway’s national anthem but tweaked to fit on an organ - as we all know, while Fren is from the good country of Sweden, Fien is from the eeeeevil country of Norway. As such, he is playing his homeland’s tune.
The reason this track is called that is because the original national anthem’s name is “Ja, vi elsker dette landet”, or “Ja, vi elsker” for short, meaning “Yes, we love this country”, or “Yes, we love” for the short version. This track, however, is titled as something a bit more appropriate for Fien - “Ja, Vi Avskyr”, meaning “Yes, We Hate”.
Fiendish Plot Listen on: Bandcamp
Fien’s theme. The theme of the one behind everything… Not too much to say here, i tried to pour a lot of evil energy into this track to make it sound like a big, evil reveal.
The subtle choir is actually a subtle reference to “fren” by Hot Dad - it’s the “fre-e-e-en” chorus. Even in the evil reflection the original persists.
Fienal Boss Listen on: Bandcamp
Final boss theme. The fienal confrontation is at hand.
This is essentially a high-octane metal remix of the previously heard Fien’s theme. Same elements from that track are dialed up. The lead instrument is now zunpets. Hell yeah.
Throughout the first half of the track you can very subtly hear the full melody of Eternal Pulse, which is another track i made for an album. There is no real narrative reason for that, i just thought it would be cool. Riveting commentary, i know.
The second section is a slightly villainous-sounding reprise of the main theme, because who doesn’t love a final boss theme that features the main theme of the game?
Frenal Push Listen on: Bandcamp
Theme for the final boss’s final phase! Fren is back! Let’s go! C’mon! You’ve almost won!
This is very much based on the second half of the first phase theme but the melody is altered to sound a lot more like the main theme of the game. The choir referencing Hot Dad’s “fren” is now replaced by the actual sample. Also, the intro guitar sample is taken directly from Homestuck’s MeGaLoVania, by Toby the Fox.
By the way, no, Fien having 1 hp before being defeated wasn't scripted. It was an accident, but it ended up so perfect that we kept it. A happy little accident...
The Skeleton Appears Listen on: Bandcamp
💀
Skeleton Metal Listen on: Bandcamp
Boss theme for the Skeleton. Hey, the game needed a mandatory skeleton, why not throw in a superboss at the end of the game.
This has a BUNCH of references jam packed into it - all about skeletons. Well, skeletons and Joel’s music. I tried to fit in as much as would be reasonable to fit into a track like this. For more details on everything that was referenced you can check the references list. One i am especially proud of is the final section with Earth Boiling Dystopia, which is a track i enjoy very much. Unfortunately, this section didn’t appear in the actual stream as that build of the game finished an unfinished version of the track, but now you can hear it in its full glory!
Additionally, this is the longest unlooped track in the game. As i said, i tried to go completely ham for this one and just have fun with it. I hope you have as much fun listening to it as i did making it.
Good Times Never End Listen on: Bandcamp
Credits theme. Well hey, you’ve done it! The adventure is done! Congratulations!
This track ended up being weirdly melancholic, but i suppose it fits. Happy that you did it, sad that it’s over.
You're Winner Listen on: Bandcamp
Yay! You won! Yippee!
Game Over Yeah! Listen on: Bandcamp
Nooo. You lost. Boohoo.
Bonus Rave Listen on: Bandcamp
Bonus track. This is very silly and goofy. It’s also a remix of LEGO Racers 2’s “Bonus Game”, which is an honorary Fren theme.
This track was initially being made as the theme for the final phase to the final boss, however i thought the vibe was very off and the track is a bit of a mess, so i decided to make Frenal Push to replace it and relegate this to a bonus track. Still, i do definitely think it’s pretty fun for what it is!
Grand Entrance Listen on: Bandcamp
Bonus track, Grand Dad edition. The theme of the Highfather, good old triple 7. As you can probably tell, this is just an evil version of the Flintstones Theme.
This was actually the first track i made while working on the project, and it was never necessarily meant to be actually used, mostly just done as exercise. I imagine this being the track that would play at the gates to Grand Dad’s castle.
Colleague Location Listen on: Bandcamp
Another bonus track.
This is a combination of several original attempts at the main menu theme before the one that’s used in-game finally came together - fast but with soundfont drums and slow with sampled drums (this is fast with both drums).
In fact, there was initially supposed to be a title screen theme and the hub menu theme, but the title screen theme never got finished and the hub menu theme also became the title screen theme. The title screen theme was supposed to be much more high octane than the hub theme, as you can see in this track.
The only thing i actually added to this while working on the album is the subtle Hot Dad “fren” motif in the back of the second half of the track, since i felt like it was kinda empty.
I placed this track last in the album since i thought it’d be appropriate to start on the main and most iconic track of the game and end on the prototype version of it.
If you’re listening to this in album order, you’re done with the album now! I thank you a lot for checking the ost out, and thank you for listening!
